Malang, en.SERU.co.id – Roughly one-fifth of Malang Regency remains in digital darkness, with limited or no internet coverage, local officials have revealed.
According to the Malang Regency Communication and Informatics Agency (Diskominfo), around 21% of the region is still classified as a blank spot. While progress has been made, bringing coverage to about 80-85% of the area, significant gaps persist, particularly in remote zones.
“Right now, blank spots in Malang Regency stand at around 21 percent. Atsalis Supriyanto MSi on Saturday, May 30, 2026. “But thanks to efforts by various internet providers and community initiatives, nearly 80 to 85 percent of the area now has access,” said Diskominfo chief Drs.
Budget constraints remain the biggest hurdle to full coverage. To tackle this, officials are pushing for a practical solution: shared communication towers that multiple providers can use.
“We want to install shared towers in blank spot areas. These towers can be utilized by various providers to expand service to regions that have long been left behind,” Atsalis explained.
Legislative Push for Faster Action
The issue has also caught the attention of the local legislature. Amarta Faza ST MSos, Chairman of Commission I at the Malang Regency DPRD, said his commission has summoned Diskominfo to discuss concrete steps.

“There are still many blank spot areas that need immediate attention. This is especially concerning because many of these locations have strong tourism potential, particularly in the mountains and coastal areas,” Faza said.
Residents and tourists frequently complain about poor connectivity in these scenic spots, which hampers both daily life and economic opportunities.
Faza urged Diskominfo to use detailed mapping data of blank spot areas as leverage in talks with internet providers.
“Diskominfo should offer this data to providers so they can invest in building shared towers and maximize signal reach,” he added.
Through closer collaboration between the local government and telecommunications companies, officials hope to accelerate internet expansion across Malang Regency—especially in isolated areas that have been overlooked for too long. (bas/mzm)
