Malang, en.SERU.co.id – Malang Regency continues to lead East Java in banana production, with harvests increasing steadily year after year. In 2025 alone, local farmers produced 1,484,169 tons of bananas, making the regency the top producer in the province.
According to Avicenna Medisica Sani Putera, Head of the Department of Food Crops, Horticulture, and Plantations (DTPHP), the main production centers are in the districts of Ampelgading, Sumbermanjing Wetan, Tirtoyudo, and especially Dampit.
“Amstirdam has quite a lot of land with good potential for banana farming,” Avicenna noted.
Production has been on an upward trend from 2019 to 2025, reaching a cumulative total of 2,810,401 tons over those seven years. Dampit stands out as the biggest contributor — in a single year, this 135.31 square kilometer district can yield around 800,000 tons.
Much of that success comes from a local variety called Sang Mulyo, grown in one village in Dampit. A single bunch can contain 16 to 22 hands and weigh between 50 to 70 kilograms. The local government is now actively promoting wider cultivation of Sang Mulyo.

Beyond this variety, Malang also produces plenty of green bananas, Ambon, Kepok, Cavendish, Candi, and several others. The DTPHP is working to strengthen markets for both fresh bananas and processed products made from them.
Here’s how banana production in Malang has grown over the years:
2019: 979,942 tons
2020: 992,252 tons
2021: 988,019 tons
2022: 1,222,855 tons
2023: 1,376,011 tons
2024: 1,456,891 tons
2025: 1,484,169 tons
It’s a solid story of consistent growth for one of Malang’s key agricultural products. (wul/mzm)
