Austin, en.SERU.co.id — Tesla has launched its Cybercab robotaxi in Austin, Texas, introducing a fully autonomous vehicle with no steering wheel or pedals to the company’s growing ride-hailing service.
According to an Associated Press report,
“Elon Musk sent dozens of self-driving Cybercabs without steering wheels or brake pedals onto the streets of Austin, Texas, on Thursday, betting that Americans will overcome their fears of rides with ‘no control’ and hop inside.”
Unlike Tesla’s existing Model Y robotaxis, the Cybercab has no traditional driving controls. It is designed to operate autonomously using Tesla’s camera-based Full Self-Driving technology and artificial intelligence.
Tesla’s Cybercab can be requested through the company’s Robotaxi service, although availability remains limited to designated areas of Austin. The company has not yet announced broader commercial availability.
Elon Musk promoted the launch on X with the message “A Storm of Cybercabs,” while Tesla had earlier described the vehicle with the slogan “No steering wheel, no pedals.”
Cybercab Faces Safety and Public Trust Questions
The launch is being closely watched by U.S. safety regulators. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is evaluating the rollout, particularly because federal vehicle regulations generally require conventional controls such as steering wheels and pedals.
The Cybercab also enters a market where public confidence in driverless vehicles remains limited. A Pew Research Center survey conducted in February 2026 found that 71 percent of U.S. adults were not too or not at all comfortable riding in a driverless car. Only 7 percent said they would be extremely or very comfortable.
Tesla’s current Robotaxi network also includes Model Y vehicles operating in parts of Austin, Dallas and Houston, as well as Miami, Orlando and Tampa. Tesla says the Cybercab is its purpose-built fully autonomous vehicle and will expand to additional areas in the future.
The Cybercab is intended to become a key part of Musk’s long-term plan for autonomous ride-hailing. Its rollout puts Tesla in closer competition with Waymo, which operates thousands of driverless vehicles across multiple U.S. cities.
For now, the Austin launch remains limited, giving Tesla an opportunity to test the vehicle with passengers while regulators and the public assess the technology.
