Malang, en.SERU.co.id – Universitas Negeri Malang (UM) and Universitas Islam Malang (UNISMA) have strengthened their institutional partnership through a joint seminar and the signing of a memorandum of understanding. The collaboration aims to improve the performance of the three pillars of higher education—teaching, research and community service—while boosting the global competitiveness of both universities. Discussions focused on strengthening governance, education, research and community engagement.
UM Rector Prof. Dr. Hariyono, M.Pd., stressed that higher education transformation must begin with a change in mindset. Universities, he said, need the courage to leave their comfort zones, expand cooperation networks and build organizations capable of continuous growth amid global change.
“By shifting this mindset, we will inevitably move from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset—becoming individuals and organizations that keep developing,” Prof. Hariyono said on Wednesday (August 12, 2026).
He added that a university’s success cannot be measured solely by ranking achievements. A strong vision, exemplary leadership and the ability of the organization to read and respond to change are essential for building a sustainable institution.
“Past achievements must be followed by the courage to keep innovating. Universities need to create collaborative ecosystems, especially to meet the increasingly competitive challenges of higher education that are closely linked to global developments,” he said.

UNISMA Rector Prof. Drs. H. Junaidi, M.Pd., Ph.D., welcomed the partnership. He described the collaboration with UM as an opportunity for UNISMA to learn from each other and strengthen both governance and the delivery of the three higher education missions.
“We recognize UM as one of the universities moving at a very high speed in its internationalization process. We want to join that pace,” he said.
The partnership also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4 on quality education and SDG 17 on partnerships for the goals. The collaboration is expected to expand networks and open opportunities for joint programs at both national and international levels. (aan/mzm)
