“This increase has gone hand in hand with the growing involvement of international academics. A total of 45 foreign lecturers were involved in Wave 1. Then 38 people in Wave 2 and it increased to 82 people in Wave 3,” said Fitri, as quoted from the UB website on Wednesday, October 7, 2026.

According to Fitri, this increase in participation has also expanded students’ opportunities to gain academic experience in an international research environment. In 2026, the percentage of students with mobility abroad increased to 66.6 percent compared with 55 percent last year. The increase mainly occurred toward Southeast Asian destinations at 10.6 percent.

Based on UB STARS 2026 data, the Southeast Asia region became the largest mobility destination with a proportion of 50.6 percent. As much as 33.4 percent of the mobility took place in Indonesia. Meanwhile, 13.1 percent went to Asian countries outside the Southeast Asia region.

“Not only providing academic mobility experience, UB STARS has also produced achievements in the form of scientific publications. As of 30 September 2026, a total of 49 student publications have been indexed in Scopus,” she said.

Of that number, nine articles entered first-quartile (Q1) journals, 19 articles Q2, 14 articles Q3, and seven articles Q4. The contribution of these publications came among others from the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science (FPIK), the Faculty of Engineering and Agroindustry (FTAB), and the Faculty of Biology and Life Sciences (FBIPK).

“If viewed based on education level, UB STARS publications also involve students from various strata. A total of 15 publications came from undergraduate students, 20 publications from master’s students, and 12 publications from doctoral students,” she added.

Vice Rector for Academic Affairs of UB, Prof Dr Ir Imam Santoso MP, said UB STARS is not only directed at providing research experience to students. It also builds a chain effect for the university’s academic ecosystem.

“We designed this program to obtain a multiplier effect. The main outputs are the increase in student mobility and the presence of foreign lecturers and practitioner lecturers at UB. In addition, this process has a direct impact on the increase in the number of collaborative publications in Scopus-indexed journals as well as Web of Science (WoS),” said Imam.

UB STARS is one of the priority programs of the UB Rector in the academic field. It aims to provide opportunities for students to complete their final assignments through an outbound scheme. Students collaborate with researchers from national research institutions as well as academics from international universities.

This collaboration does not stop at student mobility. Participants follow a series of activities ranging from supervision to the writing of scientific articles together with academic partners.

Registration for UB STARS 2026 has officially closed. The program will be reopened for the 2027 period through the SIAM UB system. Further information regarding the program can be accessed through the official page of IO UB. (aan/mzm)
