Malang, en.SERU.co.id – The Faculty of Science and Technology/Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FSTeM) of Universitas Brawijaya (UB) is strengthening its steps toward globally competitive research through the Basic Science International Conference (BASIC). The 14th BASIC 2026 international conference brings together academics and experts from a number of universities and institutions from five countries to strengthen the downstreaming of research.

Chair of the BASIC Organizing Committee, Prof. Dr. Akhmad Sabarudin MSc, emphasized that the development of technology with wide impact must rest on strong basic research. Without a solid scientific foundation, efforts to produce independent innovation risk continuing to depend on technology from abroad.

“The interconnectedness between basic science, applied science, and engineering is the main foundation of research downstreaming. Through this conference, we strive to answer increasingly complex global challenges. Starting from energy security, global warming, to the development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology,” said Prof. Sabarudin, on the sidelines of the scientific forum at The Jien Suites Resort & Convention, Malang, on Thursday-Friday, October 15–16, 2026.

According to him, strengthening the research ecosystem must be carried out continuously through inter-institutional collaboration. This includes the exchange of knowledge and the development of innovations that are able to bridge academic and industrial needs.

The conference themed “Advancing Mathematics, Sciences, and Technology for Resilient and Sustainable Development” becomes a platform for the exchange of ideas. As well as the presentation of research results, the strengthening of cross-country and cross-disciplinary academic collaboration.

A number of international experts were presented as keynote speakers and invited speakers to share knowledge and perspectives regarding the development of basic and applied sciences. By bringing together academics and researchers across countries to strengthen the interconnectedness between basic science, applied science, and technology engineering.

“BASIC is designed as a scientific collaboration space to encourage fundamental research so that it does not stop at academic publications. But develops into innovations that answer the needs of society. Strengthening basic science, particularly in the fields of chemistry and biology, is considered an important foundation for the downstreaming of research and national technology independence,” he stressed.

Involving Experts from Five Countries UB Aims for World-Class Research

Rector of Universitas Brawijaya, Prof. Widodo SSi MSi PhD, appreciated the involvement of international academics and researchers in the BASIC conference. The participation of experts from a number of countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, and Egypt, is considered able to open wider opportunities for the development of research networks and the improvement of research quality within the UB environment.

Prof. Widodo emphasized that the university is committed to strengthening support for research facilities and infrastructure. So that the academic community is able to produce scientific works that are competitive at the international level.

“This cross-country collaboration is expected to be able to spur leading research publications, produce world-class scientists who enter the category of the top 2 to 5 percent of researchers in the world. Even open the opportunity for the birth of recipients of prestigious international awards in the future,” he stressed.

The involvement of cross-country experts is expected to expand the exchange of ideas, improve the quality of scientific publications, and open opportunities for sustainable joint research.

A number of academics who attended as keynote speakers include:

  • Assoc. Prof. Ts. Abdul Halim Abdul Latiff from Universiti Teknologi Petronas, Malaysia;
  • Prof. Sulaiman Wadi Harun from University of Malaya, Malaysia;
  • Assoc. Prof. Chairat Treesubsuntorn from King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, Thailand;
  • Assoc. Prof. Wan Mohd Nuzul Hakimi bin W Salleh from Sultan Idris Education University, Malaysia;
  • Danang Teguh Qoyyimi PhD from Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia; and
  • Assist. Prof. Kento Kasahara from Osaka University, Japan.

Meanwhile, the invited speakers session presented Dr. Syazreen Niza Shair from Universiti Teknologi MARA, Malaysia; Dr. Siti Maimunah from the Ministry of Transportation of the Republic of Indonesia; and Dr. Muhammad Yusuf from Universitas Brawijaya.

The presence of these experts enriches cross-disciplinary perspectives. At the same time, it strengthens the position of the conference as a space for knowledge exchange and the development of international research networks.

Not Stopping at the Conference FSTeM Prepares Research Collaboration

Dean of FSTeM UB, Prof. Sukir Maryanto SSi MSi PhD, emphasized that BASIC is not designed merely as a paper presentation forum. This conference is directed to produce concrete cooperation that can be followed up. Through research programs, academic capacity development, and the improvement of postgraduate education quality.

“As an initial step, FSTeM UB is preparing the strengthening of inter-institutional cooperation through the signing of memorandums of understanding (MoU) and cooperation agreements (MoA),” said Prof. Sukir, as he is addressed.

The collaboration agenda includes assistance in the preparation of research proposals, the implementation of joint research across universities, up to the exploration of double degree programs for the doctoral level.

This step is expected to expand UB researchers’ access to international academic networks. Increase opportunities for research funding as well as strengthen human resource capacity in the fields of science and technology.

“FSTeM UB is encouraging a new strategy in the dissemination of research results, involving editors-in-chief and publishers of reputable international scientific journals. Through this approach, researchers obtain the opportunity to understand international publication standards, while at the same time improving the quality of scientific manuscripts,” he added.

Selected articles are expected to be directed to globally reputable journals according to the scope and review process of each journal. So that the publication of research results does not only depend on conference proceedings.

BASIC Aimed to Connect with International Research Forums

Going forward, FSTeM UB plans the development of BASIC through joint organization (in conjunction) with other international scientific forums. Including the International Conference on Chemistry and Material Science (IC2MS), as well as the bilateral Indonesia–France research partnership network through LMI-LSI.

“This integration is expected to expand the scope of collaboration, bring together more researchers from various disciplines, and encourage the formation of a sustainable joint research agenda. With an approach that connects the strengthening of basic science, applied research, reputable publications, and international partnerships. FSTeM UB strives to make BASIC more than just an academic agenda,” he stressed.

This conference is projected to become one of the gateways for strengthening the research ecosystem that is able to produce innovation, increase the competitiveness of Indonesian scientists, and support national technology independence. The organization of BASIC also received support from Sunday Travel and Bank Mandiri Brawijaya Branch. (rhd)
