New York, en.SERU.co.id – Anne Hathaway has shared the latest update on the development of The Princess Diaries 3 during an interview on SiriusXM’s Radio Andy, hosted by Andy Cohen (episode airing July 16, 2026). The actress, who reprises her role as Mia Thermopolis, admitted that the production team had to completely restart the scriptwriting process from scratch.
“I can say I think we had a story breakthrough. I think we are moving in the right direction. The script that we were working on, we kind of had to start over with this new direction, which is not the update I think anybody wants, but we all feel really good that this is gonna be the one,” Hathaway told Cohen.
It’s a refreshingly straightforward admission. After years of development and growing anticipation, the team decided the earlier draft simply wasn’t working and chose to pivot. While Hathaway did not reveal specific story details, her comments suggest the creative team has taken a new direction after reworking the screenplay.
There’s another practical reason the timeline remains unclear: Hathaway is currently expecting her third child.
“I’m busy making baby number three and that has sort of taken the place of knowing when exactly I can make Princess Diaries 3,” she explained.

The project was officially announced in 2024, with Crazy Rich Asians writer-director Adele Lim attached to helm it. In June 2026, original Princess Diaries author Meg Cabot spoke warmly about a script she had read, describing it as “amazing.” Hathaway’s comments indicate the project has continued to evolve since then.
As of now, there is still no release date and no confirmed production start. Yet Hathaway’s tone left little doubt that the team believes they have finally landed on the right path forward. For now, The Princess Diaries 3 remains in development, with no official production schedule or release date announced.
