Jakarta, en.SERU.co.id — Sony has officially announced the end of physical game disc production. Starting January 2028, all new PlayStation titles will be released solely as digital downloads, a decision many consider the beginning of the end for traditional game ownership.
“As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028,” Sony stated in its official PlayStation Blog.
After that date, new releases will only be available through the PlayStation Store or as digital codes at retailers.
Sid Shuman, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Senior Director of Content Communications, called the move a natural evolution:
“This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.”
Growing Backlash from Gamers
The announcement has triggered strong backlash across the gaming community. Many players are furious, viewing it as the final blow to true ownership. Unlike physical copies, digital games are licenses that Sony can revoke or lose support for at any time.
Concerns include the inability to resell or lend games, reliance on PlayStation Network servers, storage issues, and losing the console’s 4K Blu-ray functionality. On social media, discussions about boycotting the next PlayStation console are growing, along with petitions demanding better preservation of games.

The timing intensified the anger — Sony also confirmed the same day that it will shut down the PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita, raising even more worries about long-term access to purchased content.
While Sony claims it is simply following market trends, the fierce reaction shows many gamers are not ready to say goodbye to physical games. With almost two years until the change, there is still time for public pressure to influence Sony’s plans.
