Malang, en.SERU.co.id — Universitas Negeri Malang (UM) has once again earned international recognition, with 21 of its lecturers and researchers making the prestigious World’s Top 5% Scientists 2026 ranking by SciRank Global.
Rector Prof. Dr. Hariyono, M.Pd., personally congratulated the honorees, describing the achievement as a strong boost for the university’s research culture and a powerful incentive for more academics to publish high-quality work.
“We want to celebrate colleagues who consistently perform above average. One clear indicator is this SciRank Global ranking, which places 21 of our lecturers among the world’s top 5% scientists,” Hariyono said during the appreciation event at Graha Rektorat on Wednesday (1/7/2026).
He emphasized that the independent ranking, based on research productivity, quality, and global impact, serves as external validation of the exceptional academic work being done at UM. This year’s result marks a significant improvement over previous rankings and reinforces UM’s growing reputation not just as a teaching institution, but as a research university with internationally competitive output.

Hariyono noted that Indonesia still tends to favor oral traditions over written scholarship. That’s why recognizing lecturers who consistently publish in reputable international journals is important, they become role models for the entire academic community.
“These colleagues are helping pioneer a stronger writing culture, especially in academia,” he added. He also highlighted the collaborative nature of the research, which often involves students alongside faculty members.
The rector expressed hope that the success of these 21 scholars would inspire others — both fellow lecturers and students — to strengthen the university’s research ecosystem.
“We want this to become a positive ‘virus’ that spreads throughout UM,” he said.

Vice Rector III Prof. Dr. Markus Diantoro, M.Si., who is also among the ranked scientists, said the achievement goes beyond individual recognition. It strengthens UM’s international networks and opens doors for more collaborations with global partners and industry.
“These names are already well-known outside UM. This ranking increases trust from international collaborators and helps attract prospective students as well,” Diantoro said.
He noted that the university’s research output has grown significantly since around 2017, thanks to years of consistent effort. The top scientists now serve as key drivers in mentoring younger researchers and building a stronger research culture across the campus.
This latest accomplishment underscores UM’s rising profile in global academia, with its scholars producing work that is increasingly cited and impactful worldwide. (rhd)
