Los Angeles, en.SERU.co.id — Fans of The Big Bang Theory were caught completely off guard on Thursday night. Kaley Cuoco made a surprise return as Penny in the second episode of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe.
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is the latest spin-off set in The Big Bang Theory universe and follows Stuart Bloom as he navigates a multiverse crisis.
The moment comes near the end of the episode, titled “Spoiler: Bert Is Magic.” After Stuart, Bert, and Kripke endure a bizarre, emotion-controlled version of Pasadena, they are kidnapped by a resistance group.
When the hoods come off, the group’s leader is revealed to be Penny, but not the Penny fans remember.
This alternate version has dark hair, a hardened personality, and no patience for the trio.
The surprise cameo quickly sparked reactions across social media, with many viewers saying they did a double take before realizing it was Cuoco.
A Very Different Penny
Co-creator Chuck Lorre explained the creative choice in an interview with Variety.
“A big part of it was offering them a challenge to do something entirely different. Kaley’s not playing the server in the Cheesecake Factory. It’s still Penny, and now she’s a badass guerrilla leader,” he said.
In a separate conversation with People, Lorre added that the multiverse setup was designed from the beginning to allow these kinds of reinventions. “She’s still Penny, but she has an entirely different background. She never worked at the Cheesecake Factory, never met Leonard. She’s a leader of a revolutionary guerrilla group, and she’s not averse to violence.”

Kevin Sussman, who stars as Stuart, called the reunion with his former co-star a genuine pleasure. Speaking to Radio Times, he said the return of original cast members has felt like “a wonderful reunion” after seven years.
The series itself follows Stuart Bloom as he tries to undo a multiverse crisis he accidentally triggered. While the series premiere introduced an alternate version of Raj, it was Cuoco’s unexpected return as Penny that quickly became the biggest talking point among fans.
New episodes of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe continue to drop weekly on HBO Max.
