Los Angeles, en.SERU.co.id — More than nine years after his passing, Muhammad Ali’s life is coming to television in a new way. Amazon Prime Video will debut The Greatest on November 4, 2026.

This eight-episode drama marks a significant milestone as the first authorized scripted project on Ali’s life, developed in close collaboration with his estate. Lonnie Ali, his widow, serves as an executive producer.

Showrunner Ben Watkins has described the series as an opportunity to explore aspects of Ali’s life that go beyond the well-known fights and public interviews.

“It’s a show that’s designed to show you all the stuff that wasn’t in documentaries,” he said.

The first season follows Ali’s early years, from his Olympic gold medal win in 1960 as an 18-year-old Cassius Clay to claiming the heavyweight title in 1964.

Casting and Production

Jaalen Best takes on the lead role as the young Cassius Clay, later Muhammad Ali. Lonnie Ali has spoken warmly about the casting, calling Best “a soulful gem” who captures her late husband’s resilience, courage, charisma, and confidence.

The supporting cast includes Omari Hardwick and Dana Gourrier as Ali’s parents, Cassius “Cash” Clay Sr. and Odessa “Bird” Clay; Kai Parham as his brother Rahaman Ali; Amin Joseph as Sonny Liston; Michael Ealy as Malcolm X; and Giovanni Ribisi as trainer Angelo Dundee.

Filming took place in 2025 in Toronto and other parts of Ontario, Canada. The project brings together several high-profile partners, including Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society, Roc Nation, PolyGram Entertainment, and Authentic Brands Group.

Development and Background

The series was officially greenlit in July 2024 after years of development. Producer Josh Wakely originally secured the rights to Ali’s story and brought the idea to Amazon. Lonnie Ali expressed her enthusiasm about working with Watkins, noting that he understood the “essence and nuance” of her husband’s life.

Watkins described leading the series as both a privilege and a challenge.

“Humbling and scary, and a dream come true.”

He acknowledged the responsibility of portraying a global icon whose influence extended far beyond the boxing ring.

Unlike earlier projects such as Will Smith’s 2001 film Ali or Ken Burns’ 2021 documentary, The Greatest aims to offer a more intimate portrait. It delves into Ali’s personal roles as a husband, father, brother, and son, while weaving in the broader context of the Civil Rights movement and his spiritual journey.

A teaser trailer has already been released, offering fans a first look at the highly anticipated drama. The Greatest will premiere exclusively on Amazon Prime Video on November 4, 2026, and will be available in more than 240 countries and territories.
