Annecy, France, en.SERU.co.id — Universal Pictures and Illumination announced a new original animated film titled Not Alone, starring Timothée Chalamet and Selena Gomez in the lead voice roles. The announcement was made at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June 2026.

Chalamet, a four-time Oscar nominee, is making his feature animation debut as Joe, described as “an introverted rocket mechanic who lives a quiet life alone.” Gomez voices Fran, “a brilliant astro-botanist who is developing the world’s first-ever plant-fueled rocket.”

According to the studio, the pair meet while preparing for the rocket’s launch. Sparks fly, but romance doesn’t come easily for either of them. The story kicks into high gear when three tiny aliens: Dunk, Welly, and Shirm, hide in Joe’s house while fleeing from a bumbling cop, Officer Zandro (voiced by Brett Goldstein). The aliens plan to steal Fran’s rocket to get back home.

The sci-fi romantic comedy is directed by Illumination veterans Eric Guillon, Claire Dodgson, and Jonathan Del Val. Other voice actors include Rob Brydon, Diane Morgan, Jamie Demetriou, Allison Janney, and Lamorne Morris.

Not Alone is scheduled to arrive in theaters on April 16, 2027, stepping into the slot previously held by an untitled Illumination project. The studio, known for Minions, Despicable Me, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, also released the first official poster.

Chalamet teased the announcement himself on Instagram Story the day before, sharing a photo of a cloudy sky with the simple caption “new movie announcement tmrw :)” and a rocket emoji.

Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri described the film as “a romance between two very shy people incapable of coming together until the possibility of Earth’s demise intervenes.” He added that the studio is “going back to originality” with this project and a homegrown directing team.

This will be another pairing for Chalamet and Gomez, who previously appeared together in A Rainy Day in New York (2019). Fans are already excited about the unexpected match-up in an animated format.
