Malang, en.SERU.co.id – The roar of World Cup 2026 crowds is echoing through the streets of Malang. For football fans, the tournament that kicked off on June 11 has been a long-awaited spectacle featuring the world’s top players. But for many local businesses, it’s proving to be a golden opportunity.
Small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), coffee shops, and casual hangout spots are seeing a surge in customers and revenue as fans flock to watch matches together. The phenomenon hasn’t gone unnoticed by Malang Mayor Wahyu Hidayat, who views the widespread excitement as a powerful driver for grassroots economic activity.
“Nobar (communal match watching) isn’t just about cheering on your favorite team. Behind the lively atmosphere, there’s real economic momentum involving food and drink vendors, MSMEs, and many others,” Wahyu said.
The city government is actively fueling the festive spirit. On Monday (June 15), local agencies were encouraged to host group viewings, while civil servants have been invited to wear jerseys of participating World Cup teams every Friday.
“These simple steps are meant to heighten the excitement and stimulate the economy around football merchandise and related items,” the mayor explained.

For Wahyu, the football euphoria serves as a bridge between entertainment, community bonding, and economic growth. Nobar events create spaces where people from all walks of life can come together, supporting their teams while strengthening social ties.
That said, he stressed the importance of responsibility amid the celebrations. Organizers, business owners, and residents are urged to maintain order and safety.
“I call on everyone — cafes, hangout spots, and the public — to keep things orderly and secure. Please coordinate with relevant authorities so that this entertainment doesn’t disturb other residents,” Wahyu added. (bas/mzm)
