Surakarta, en.SERU.co.id – Solo Safari has a new resident in the form of a female Chapman zebra foal named Gayatri Loreng. The baby zebra, born on 18 September 2026, is now beginning to be introduced to the environment as well as other animals in the African savanna area.
The birth of Gayatri Loreng adds to the collection of Chapman zebras cared for at Solo Safari. Before being introduced to visitors, the care team conducted observations and health examinations to ensure the condition of the mother and her offspring was in good condition.
Curator of Solo Safari, Muhammad Nur Hudayanto, said Gayatri Loreng is the offspring of a pair of Chapman zebras named Ojet and Oci. The two mated at the end of 2025 before Oci gave birth in September 2026.
At birth, Gayatri Loreng had a weight of around 25–30 kilograms. The baby zebra was also already able to stand and nurse from its mother not long after being born.
“When an animal is newly born, we do not immediately expose it to the public. There is a stage of observation, monitoring, and health control that must be gone through,” said Tanto, as he is popularly known, at Solo Safari on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.
Monitoring is carried out by the curator, veterinarians, the animal healthcare medical team, paramedics, as well as animal keepers. They supervise the condition of the mother, Gayatri Loreng’s ability to nurse, and her physical development during the early growth period.
When aged one to two weeks, Gayatri Loreng began to be introduced to grazing activities. Entering the age of around three weeks, the care team continued the process by building interaction and socialization with other animals.
The introduction of Gayatri Loreng was held by the management of Solo Safari and attended by dozens of journalists as well as administrators and members of the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) Surakarta on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. Gayatri Loreng was seen running and occasionally interacting with a young bull that was in the same area.
Chair of PWI Surakarta, Sri Hartanto, gave the name Gayatri Loreng to the baby zebra. The name Gayatri is taken from Sanskrit, which he interprets as a brave, resilient, and pure woman who is a savior. Meanwhile, Loreng refers to the black-and-white stripe pattern that is the characteristic of zebras.
“The baby zebra is so cute, spirited, and brave even though she is not yet a month old,” said Hartanto.

Adding to the Animal Collection
Solo Safari previously had four Chapman zebras that were brought from Bogor in 2023. In addition to Ojet and Oci, there is a pair of zebras named Praja and Wita. The birth of Gayatri Loreng adds a generation of Chapman zebras cared for in the animal tourism area.
Overall, Solo Safari cares for around 400 animals of various types. The African savanna area is one of the areas that houses animals originating from Africa, including lions and various other savanna inhabitants.
The management also records the breeding of a number of other animals, among them Bengal Tigers, Javan Banteng, Deer, and Watusi.
Director of the Regional Public Company Taman Satwa Taru Jurug (TSTJ) Solo, Achmad Syukri Prihanto, welcomed the birth of Gayatri Loreng. According to him, the management had previously also involved other parties in giving names to newly born animals, including young bull and young zebras.
He hopes the presence of Gayatri Loreng can add to the appeal of Solo Safari while at the same time encouraging the public to visit and get to know animals more closely.
General Manager of Solo Safari, Miyana Harikna, hopes the relationship with members of the press can develop into cooperation to introduce tourism destinations in Surakarta City to a wider public.
