London, en.SERU.co.id — Dame Meera Syal has spoken publicly for the first time about a sexual assault she experienced early in her career. The 65-year-old British actress, comedian and writer shared the account in an interview with The Sunday Times Magazine ahead of the release of her forthcoming memoir, Vigilauntie, scheduled for September 2026.

Syal said the incident occurred in the 1980s while she was working as a jazz singer in Covent Garden and considering returning to the West Midlands. An older Asian actor with connections to casting directors invited her to dinner and offered to help advance her career.

According to Syal, the man attempted to sexually assault her after they were alone. She managed to leave the house and returned to a friend’s home. The actor has not been publicly identified.

Syal did not report the incident to police at the time. She said she feared the impact a public criminal case could have had on her parents and kept the experience to herself for years.

How the Experience Changed Her Career

Syal later told close female friends about what had happened and discovered that some had experienced similar situations.

“This is the first time I’ve spoken about this publicly,” Syal told The Times, explaining that the experience changed the direction of her life and career.

Rather than abandoning her ambitions, she became involved with a group of South Asian writers who encouraged her to write and supported her during the period. Syal said the experience also influenced the strong female characters she later created.

She went on to become a prominent figure in British comedy, co-creating and starring in Goodness Gracious Me and starring in The Kumars at No. 42.

Her memoir, Vigilauntie, is due to be published in September 2026.
