Oslo, en.SERU.co.id — King Harald V of Norway is in an “extremely serious” condition after his health deteriorated while receiving treatment at Oslo University Hospital, the Norwegian Royal Palace announced on Thursday.
The 89-year-old monarch has been hospitalized since August 17 for complications related to hemolytic anemia, a condition in which red blood cells are destroyed faster than the body can replace them.
Harald later developed a bacterial infection in his blood. Palace officials previously said he was receiving antibiotics and had responded to treatment, with his condition initially described as stable.
The palace issued a brief update on Thursday, stating:
“His Majesty the King’s health condition is extremely serious.” No further medical details were provided.
Royal Family Gathers at Hospital
Following the announcement, Queen Sonja and Crown Prince Haakon cancelled their scheduled engagements. Haakon, who has been serving as regent during his father’s illness, continues to carry out the king’s constitutional duties.
Norwegian media also reported that Crown Princess Mette-Marit, Princess Astrid and other members of the royal family were at Oslo University Hospital.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre cancelled a planned trip to Germany and expressed concern for the king and his family.
“The whole nation is with us as we send warm thoughts to the king and the rest of the royal family,” Støre said.
Harald’s Recent Health Problems
King Harald has experienced several health issues in recent years. In 2024, he received a pacemaker after becoming ill during a private trip to Malaysia. Later that year, the palace announced that his official duties would be reduced because of his age.
Harald has repeatedly ruled out abdication, saying that the oath he took before parliament in 1991 was intended to last for life.
The king remains on sick leave, while Crown Prince Haakon continues to perform his constitutional responsibilities. Further updates from the Royal Palace are expected as his condition develops.
