Tokyo, en.SERU.co.id – Studio Ghibli, the legendary animation studio behind classics like Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro, has officially announced a new original short film titled Majo no Tani no Yoru, or A Night in the Valley of Witches. The film is set to premiere on July 8, 2026, exclusively at Cinema Orion inside the Grand Warehouse at Ghibli Park in Aichi Prefecture, Japan.
This marks the studio’s first original short created specifically for Ghibli Park. The park’s Valley of the Witches area is the setting for this story, which takes inspiration from classic Ghibli films such as Kiki’s Delivery Service, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Earwig and the Witch.
According to the official Ghibli Park announcement:
“The story takes place in the Valley of Witches at Ghibli Park and is the first original short animated film created by Studio Ghibli specifically for Ghibli Park.”
Goro Miyazaki (director of Tales from Earthsea and From Up on Poppy Hill) and Akihiko Yamashita (known for his work on Howl’s Moving Castle and Modest Heroes) are co-directing. The pair is expected to attend the premiere screening for a stage greeting and behind-the-scenes chat with the audience.
Ghibli Park
According to the official Ghibli Park site, the short is “the first original short animated film created by Studio Ghibli specifically for Ghibli Park.”
The theater only holds around 150 people, so tickets will be limited. Advance reservations are required, and you’ll also need a ticket that grants access to the Grand Warehouse. Sales for July visits reportedly open in mid-May.
So far, there’s no word on wider theatrical releases or streaming options. For now, it’s a park-only experience — which makes sense given how closely it’s tied to the location.
Fans have reacted positively to the announcement, appreciating the cozy, classic Ghibli vibe in the early visuals. It’s a nice reminder that the studio continues to create new work, even if it’s on a smaller, more intimate scale.
