Malang, en.SERU.co.id – The Minister of Environment, Dr. Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, S.Hut., M.P., is encouraging Malang City to keep striving for the prestigious Adipura Award. He has called on the city government to intensify mass community clean-up activities (korve or kerja bakti) so that Malang can successfully claim the award in the future.
After participating in a clean-up event on Jalan Ijen on Sunday (March 29, 2026), Minister Hanif stated that Malang’s waste management performance is already quite good. With service coverage reaching 99 percent, the city has earned the “Towards Clean City” (Menuju Kota Bersih) title.
“Most of the waste is already directed to the final disposal site (TPA) and managed using a sanitary landfill system, in accordance with Law Number 18 of 2008,” he said.
He added that Malang’s current cleanliness achievement score stands at 73.5 – only two points short of the Adipura standard. However, the minister stressed that winning an award is not the main objective.
“This is not just about the title. It is our constitutional obligation to provide a good environment for the community,” he asserted.
It is known that for the first time, the Ministry of Environment has decided not to award any Adipura titles in 2026. Under the new assessment scheme, no region has yet fully met the national standards for comprehensive waste management.
Nevertheless, the ministry has granted the “Towards Clean City/Regency” recognition to 35 regions, including Malang City, as appreciation for their efforts to optimize waste management.
Minister Hanif explained that his visit to Malang was part of a national effort to accelerate waste handling. Following directives from President Prabowo Subianto, all regions are targeted to resolve their waste problems by 2029 at the latest.
“Today we are in Malang with the Mayor and Regents to follow up on the acceleration of waste-to-energy development. This is important because the volume of waste in the Greater Malang area is quite large,” he revealed.
One of the fundamental steps, according to the minister, is waste separation at source. He therefore invited all residents of Malang City to actively participate in clean-up activities.
“Without waste separation, the cost of downstream management will be very heavy. That is why public awareness is the key,” he said.

Meanwhile, Malang Mayor Dr. Ir. Wahyu Hidayat, M.M., said the city government has been following up on central government directives through various programs to raise public awareness. These include holding clean-up drives every Wednesday and Friday, as well as instilling clean living habits among school students.
“We continue to mobilize joint work parties. Even school children must do clean-up activities before entering class. This is part of building awareness from an early age,” he explained.
The mayor also highlighted the ongoing problem of people illegally dumping waste, which contributes to flooding in Malang City.
“With the presence of the Environment Minister, we hope to further increase public awareness about disposing of waste in the proper place. Let us take care of our environment, starting from throwing garbage in its place and sorting waste from home,” he concluded. (bas/rhd)
