Malang, en.SERU.co.id – The Mayor of Malang has set a positive example for civil servants (ASN) by promoting the use of bicycles every Friday. The new policy, which took effect today (Friday, March 27, 2026), aims to anticipate potential fuel shortages caused by current global geopolitical dynamics.
Malang Mayor Dr. Ir. Wahyu Hidayat, MM, stated that cycling on Fridays not only helps maintain health but also saves energy. He added that cycling culture is already quite popular among ASN.
“First, because it’s Friday, it’s for maintaining health. Second, many ASN enjoy cycling. Third, we also link it to fuel savings. So, on this Friday Krida, there will be cycling, gymnastics, and community service (kerja bakti),” Wahyu said while attending the opening of SPPG Sukoharjo 2 on Friday (27/3/2026).
For now, the policy is only implemented on Fridays. The Malang City Government has not yet made bicycle use mandatory for ASN on all working days.
“We’re starting with Fridays first. Since there is already gymnastics and community service, it feels more fitting to include cycling as well,” he explained.
For ASN who do not own a bicycle, the city government provides an alternative by encouraging the use of public transportation. Currently, several public transport routes already pass through the City Hall area.

Regarding the central government’s call for fuel efficiency, Mayor Wahyu described the measure as a form of anticipation toward the current global situation. However, he assured that fuel availability remains safe and the public does not need to worry.
“We are only responding to the current conditions as a precaution. But I am confident it will not have a major impact on the community. Our fuel stocks are secure,” he clarified.
He also addressed the phenomenon of panic buying occurring in several regions, urging the public not to make excessive purchases, as fuel supply is under control.
Furthermore, when asked about the planned work-from-home (WFH) policy reportedly being considered by the East Java Provincial Government every Wednesday starting next month, Wahyu said the Malang City Government is still waiting for clearer official regulations from the central government.
“We will wait for clearer rules. Yesterday it was only conveyed as a recommendation, so we will adjust accordingly later,” he concluded. (bas/rhd)
