Malang, en.SERU.co.id – In an era where self-diagnosis via online information is increasingly common, a groundbreaking academic innovation has emerged to address the issue. Dr. Syifa Mustika, Sp.PD., K-GEH., a specialist in internal medicine and a lecturer-researcher at Universitas Brawijaya (UB), has officially unveiled SmartGerdX.

SmartGerdX is a web-based digital platform specifically designed to assist the public in early detection of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). This innovation arises from Dr. Syifa’s concern over the growing number of patients who self-diagnose GERD based solely on similar symptoms or misinformation.

The platform relies on a solid medical foundation, adapting the clinically validated GERD-Q questionnaire used in medical practice worldwide.

“There are six questions that I’ve modified for users to fill out. Afterward, the system will generate a score along with recommendations on medication use and lifestyle modifications,” explained Dr. Syifa.

With this tool, individuals can obtain a more accurate initial assessment before seeking further examination from a specialist. Developed since 2024, the innovation is no mere prototype—it has been successfully piloted with 250 residents in Banyuwangi Regency, earning direct praise from Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani.

“SmartGerdX demonstrates how technology can make healthcare services more inclusive, efficient, and data-driven. This is the kind of collaboration we hope for between local government and universities,” stated Ipuk.

SmartGerdX stands as tangible proof of the success of Universitas Brawijaya’s research downstreaming program, promoted by the Directorate of Innovation and Science-Technology Areas (DIKST). The platform has even secured a spot among the 117 innovations listed by the Business Innovation Center (BIC) under the Ministry of Research and Technology.

UB’s Vice Rector for Research and Innovation, Prof. Unti Ludigdo, affirmed that the university will continue to ensure faculty research extends beyond academic journals and labs.

“Our hope is that this becomes a real solution for the public,” he concluded.

For those interested in self-administered early detection, the platform is freely accessible via SmartGerdX.com. It is expected to better educate the public and encourage wiser management of digestive health issues. (dik/ono)
