Malang, en.SERU.co.id – A total of 66 Free Student Transport vehicles of Malang City have begun operating after being officially inaugurated on Monday, August 31, 2026. The Free Student Transport routes pass through 15 corridors across Malang City.
Head of the Malang City Transportation Agency (Dishub), Drs R Widjaja Saleh Putra, said the Free Student Transport service covers 15 corridors. Departure services start at 4.45 am WIB and student pick-up services for the return journey begin at 2.45 pm WIB.
“This program aims to make transportation access easier for students and support the creation of safe and comfortable public transport services. At the same time, it reduces traffic density in Malang City during school departure and return hours,” Widjaja said.
Free Student Transport Eases Access to Schools
The Malang City Government hopes the Free Student Transport can make it easier for students to obtain transportation access to school. On the other hand, the program is expected to become a stimulus for the sustainability of city transport through a more measurable service system.
“This program is able to reduce the number of private vehicles moving on public roads. The hope is that it can reduce traffic density during school departure hours,” he said.
The program with the Buy the Service (BTS) scheme provides free transportation access for students. This service is also an effort by the Malang City Government to maintain the sustainability of city transport and its drivers.
“The service value is estimated at around Rp6,000 per kilometer. That amount refers to the Vehicle Operating Cost (BOK) calculation of the Ministry of Transportation. Payment to operators is made based on travel performance. This means payment is adjusted to the services actually carried out by each fleet,” Widjaja added.
Malang City Dishub has prepared a budget of around Rp1.9 billion to support services with a maximum capacity of 96 vehicles. However, in the initial stage only 66 vehicles that meet the requirements are operating, so the number of requests can still increase. Dishub has recorded that a number of city transport drivers are interested in joining the Free Student Transport program.

Dishub Implements Supervision and Mitigation by Installing GPS
As a form of supervision and mitigation, Dishub has installed Global Positioning System (GPS) devices on the vehicles in operation. The system is used to monitor the fleet’s journeys so that they remain on the route and carry out services according to the provisions.
“There are behaviors that we have already conveyed to the drivers. They must not smoke, must not wear shorts, must behave politely, and must not utter impolite sentences,” he explained.
The Free Student Transport routes in the initial stage use paths previously served by school buses and Elf vehicles. Those services were previously managed by the Malang City Education and Culture Agency.
To make it easier for the public and students, information regarding routes and operations of the transport can be accessed through the Trans Jatim Ajaib application. Students do not need to register to use the service; they simply utilize the student transport according to the available corridors.
