Malang, en.SERU.co.id – The Indonesian central government has pledged to make Malang City free of unfit dwellings (RTLH) by the end of 2026, following a fresh injection of funds from President Prabowo Subianto.
Housing and Settlement Areas Minister Maruarar Sirait announced the commitment during a site visit in Malang on Friday (3/7/2026), where he inspected recipients of the Self-Help Housing Stimulant Assistance (BSPS) program.
“On behalf of President Prabowo, I’ve decided to add extra support so that Malang can be completely rid of unfit housing by 2026. Every resident will have a decent place to live,” Sirait said.
According to verified data, the city has 927 substandard homes. The local government (Pemkot Malang) is funding repairs for 50 units through its budget, another 50 are covered by corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs, and 674 will be handled through the national budget. The remaining 153 units will now be funded by the additional central government assistance.
Work kicked off today with preparations for the first 10 homes. The full rehabilitation across all units is targeted for completion within the next three months.

“I’ve asked the city team to move quickly, cleanly, and professionally. The sooner it’s done, the better,” Sirait emphasized.
He also stressed the importance of transparent management through a “people’s tender” system. All procurement must be open and competitive to secure better prices and ensure the benefits truly reach residents. The approach has already delivered efficiency gains of around Rp3 million per house, which can be redirected toward higher-quality materials.
Sirait added that suppliers, such as building material stores, must involve multiple parties to foster healthy competition and prevent any monopoly.
Vice Mayor Ali Muthohirin welcomed the additional quota, noting that previous proposals from the city had been constrained by limited national allocations.
“This is very good news for our people. The verified proposals can now all be accommodated, bringing us closer to a livable Malang for everyone,” he said.

Recipients are prioritized from the lowest income brackets (deciles 1 to 4), focusing on the poorest residents who meet administrative requirements, including proof of land ownership.
One beneficiary, Moh Jailani, expressed deep gratitude. The 41-year resident said his modest 5×8 meter home frequently leaked during rains due to its dilapidated roof and structure.
“Alhamdulillah, I’m incredibly thankful for this help. I hope the house will be much better, and my family can finally live more comfortably,” said Jailani, a casual laborer who works as a construction worker and sugarcane cutter.
His home will be fully demolished and rebuilt starting July 10, 2026. While construction is underway, he and his wife and child will temporarily stay next door with his parents. (bas/mzm)
