Jakarta, en.SERU.co.id – Two Indonesian journalists from the daily newspaper Republika were arrested by Israeli military forces after their ship, part of the Global Sumud Flotilla 2.0, was intercepted en route to Gaza.

Bambang Noroyono and photographer Thoudy Badai were on board the vessel carrying humanitarian aid and international volunteers when it was stopped in the eastern Mediterranean near Cyprus waters. The flotilla was attempting to deliver logistical supplies and medicine to civilians affected by the prolonged conflict and blockade in Gaza.

Andi Muhyiddin, Editor-in-Chief of Republika, confirmed the incident on Tuesday (19/5/2026). He emphasized that the two journalists were performing their professional duties while participating in the humanitarian mission.

“The safety of both is now our top priority,” Andi said. He strongly condemned the interception and detention, describing it as a serious violation of international law, universal humanitarian principles, and the freedom of civilians.

“The volunteers on board posed no military threat whatsoever. This action by Israel is unacceptable,” he added.

Strong Reactions in Indonesia

The arrests have triggered widespread condemnation across Indonesia. Lawmakers, government officials, and humanitarian groups have urged Israel to immediately release all detainees and ensure the safety of Indonesian citizens.

Wakil Ketua DPR RI Saan Mustopa called on the Indonesian government, particularly the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to take swift diplomatic measures.

“The government must pursue maximum diplomatic efforts to secure the quick release and repatriation of all Indonesians involved in this humanitarian mission,” he said.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also issued a firm statement. Spokesperson Yvone Mewengkang said the government is closely monitoring the situation and actively trying to establish contact with those on board.

“We strongly condemn the interception of the humanitarian vessels. Indonesia demands that Israel immediately release all ships and crew members of the international humanitarian mission,” Yvone said. She added that the protection of Indonesian nationals remains the government’s highest priority.

Israel’s Position

On the other side, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the military operation, calling the flotilla a political provocation aimed at breaching Israel’s blockade of Gaza. Israeli authorities have stated they will not allow any vessels to reach Gaza by sea.

Call for Presidential Intervention

Juwaini Ahmad of the Global Peace Convoy Indonesia (GPCI) urged President Prabowo Subianto to mobilize all available diplomatic resources.

“Time is critical. Prolonged detention affects the physical and psychological well-being of the volunteers and journalists. These are not armed individuals — they are activists and humanitarian workers bringing aid to Palestinian civilians,” he stressed.

As of now, the condition and exact whereabouts of the two Indonesian journalists remain under close watch by both the Indonesian government and Republika. Further updates are expected as diplomatic efforts continue. (aan/mzm)
