Surabaya, en.SERU.co.id – East Java is rolling out a vehicle tax relief program throughout August 2026 to mark Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day. The initiative, which runs from 1 to 31 August, offers exemptions and reductions on motor vehicle tax (PKB) arrears and related penalties.
One of the standout measures targets online motorcycle taxi (ojol) drivers. They can have the principal arrears and fines on PKB for 2025 and earlier years fully waived, provided the principal amount does not exceed Rp500,000.
Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa said the policy goes beyond temporary economic relief. It also aims to improve tax compliance and strengthen the province’s fiscal position.
The program is formalized under East Java Governor’s Decree Number 100.3.3.1/482/013/2026 concerning the Exemption of Provincial Regional Taxes. In addition to ojol drivers, the full exemption of principal arrears (up to Rp500,000) also applies to people listed in the National Single Socio-Economic Data (DTSEN) and owners of three-wheeled vehicles.
Workers receive a different form of relief: a 20 percent reduction on principal PKB arrears for two-wheeled vehicles under the same conditions (2025 and prior years, principal max Rp500,000).
Beyond arrears, the province is waiving administrative penalties for late PKB payments, vehicle ownership transfer fees (BBNKB), and progressive PKB charges. Fines on the Road Traffic Accident Compulsory Contribution (SWDKLLJ) for previous years are also being dropped, though the current year’s fine still applies as usual.
Residents will continue to benefit from the existing basic relief rates of 24.7 percent on PKB and 37.25 percent on BBNKB. As a result, the rates for 2026 will not increase.

“We want this policy to make things easier and offer economic protection for online motorcycle taxi drivers. They have contributed as economic drivers and supporters of public transportation services,” Khofifah said.
East Java’s Regional Revenue Agency (Bapenda) projects that nearly 963,000 tax objects will take advantage of the program this month. The total value of the exemptions is estimated at around Rp17.25 billion. Even with the relief, the initiative is expected to generate approximately Rp297.46 billion in regional revenue.
Khofifah described the amnesty as part of a broader effort to build a culture of voluntary tax compliance through a more persuasive approach. She urged residents to settle their obligations before the program ends on 31 August, either at joint Samsat offices across the province or through available digital payment channels.
The governor emphasized that the taxes collected ultimately return to the public in the form of infrastructure, education, health services, transportation, and other facilities. (aan/mzm)
