“The burned area is currently estimated at about 50 hectares. The vegetation includes mountain pine, mentigen, acacia and shrubs,” Sadono said.

Field observations show the flames have already crossed the Malang-Lumajang border monument and are moving into Malang Regency territory. The fire is roughly 800 metres from the monument when measured by road distance. Weather in the Bromo area remains clear to cloudy with moderate winds blowing westward.

Firefighting efforts involve multiple agencies and community groups, including the national park authority, the East Java Provincial Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), local governments of Malang, Probolinggo and Lumajang, the regency-level BPBD offices, the Ngadas Village Fire Care Community, and volunteers. Teams are creating firebreaks and using water sprays from two vehicles supplied by the park authority and the provincial BPBD. The provincial agency has also deployed one water tanker for ground operations.

Difficult terrain on the forested slopes continues to hinder access for ground crews.

As a safety measure, the national park authority has temporarily closed tourist access to Mount Bromo via the Malang and Lumajang routes. (wul/mzm)
