Head of Jember’s Transportation Agency, Gatot Triyono, said the new service will strengthen Jember’s growing economy by improving access to major destinations.

“Through Surabaya as Lion Group’s main hub, people in Jember can now easily connect to cities like Jakarta, Batam, Pekanbaru, Makassar, Denpasar, and Kupang. International connections to Kuala Lumpur and Jeddah are also available,” Gatot said on Thursday (28/5/2026).

The development aligns with Jember’s solid economic performance. According to Statistics Indonesia (BPS), the regency’s economy grew by 5.47% in 2025, reaching a Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) of Rp110.98 trillion.

Agriculture, forestry, and fisheries remain the backbone of the local economy, contributing 25.42% of the total. However, trade, manufacturing, and services sectors are also showing strong momentum.

Jember, known as the “Land of Tobacco,” continues to expand its reach in national and international markets. One standout performer is coffee production, which has surged dramatically — from 4,477 tons in 2023 to 11,700 tons in 2024, and hitting 15,000 tons in 2025. The commodity is now exported to Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, including direct shipments to Egypt.

The regency is also famous for its premium hand-rolled cigars, with local factories producing 3,000 to 4,000 cigars daily to meet demand from markets across Asia, America, and Europe.

In addition, edamame has emerged as a successful modern agribusiness product, processed locally and exported to various countries.

The new air route is expected to further accelerate Jember’s growth by making travel faster and more convenient for both business and tourism. (sgt/mzm)
