Sidoarjo, en.SERU.co.id – Heart disease is no longer identical to a disease of old age. The trend of cardiovascular disorders is now increasingly lurking toward the younger generation, demanding collective awareness from all layers of society to begin fixing lifestyles from an early stage.

That important message was affirmed by the Chair of the Indonesian Heart Foundation (YJI) Sidoarjo Branch, Dr. Sriatun Subandi, in a seminar commemorating World Heart Day themed 45 Years Guarding the Future of the Nation that was held lively at the Delta Wibawa Pavilion, Sidoarjo.

In her presentation, Dr. Sriatun revealed that heart and blood vessel disease still holds the title as the largest cause of death in the world.

“The impact is not only on health alone, but also brings a very large financial burden for the country,” she explained.

Based on data from the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, financing for the handling of heart disease and stroke in the National Health Insurance (JKN) program reached a fantastic figure of Rp 22.8 trillion throughout 2023.

“The results of the Indonesian Health Survey (SKI) 2023 show the prevalence of heart disease reaches 0.85 percent nationally. What is surprising is that the young age group of 25 – 34 years has already recorded a prevalence of 0.15 percent. This is a strong signal that the young generation must no longer be negligent,” said Dr. Sriatun.

According to Dr. Sriatun, most risk factors for heart disease are rooted in daily habits that are often considered trivial. Among them are the lack of physical activity and exercise, lack of consumption of fruits and vegetables, smoking habits, and excessive consumption of sugar, salt, and fat.

“To suppress the rate of this disease, YJI Sidoarjo encourages promotive and preventive steps massively. The community is urged to return to the basics of a healthy lifestyle, namely routinely moving and maintaining balanced nutritional intake,” she said.

Maintaining heart health, continued Dr. Sriatun, is a shared responsibility that requires synergistic involvement between health workers, families, up to community organizations.

The World Heart Day commemoration at the Delta Wibawa Pavilion was not merely filled with educational seminars. Hundreds of participants from the general public, sports communities, Heads of Community Health Centers, up to community organizations appeared enthusiastic in following the series of interactive activities. Among them were the competition for the award presentation of the Healthy Heart Gymnastics Team Competition between Healthy Heart Club (KJS) groups, social concern namely the distribution of special basic necessity packages for heart disease sufferers, as well as early detection with free heart health examination services for the participants.

“Through this activity, YJI Sidoarjo hopes that awareness of early prevention becomes increasingly widespread, so that the community can get used to a healthy lifestyle for a healthier future investment,” she concluded. (pan/ono)
