Jakarta, en.SERU.co.id – The Indonesian national team successfully lifted the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 trophy after defeating Thailand through a dramatic 4-2 penalty shootout at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (GBK) on Monday evening, 5 October 2026. After the match remained level at 2-2 through extra time, the Garuda squad stayed composed in the penalty shootout and converted all four of their attempts. This victory becomes valuable capital for Indonesia ahead of the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia.
The fiercely contested final showcased Indonesia’s long struggle to lift the trophy. Thailand was able to put up resistance until the final minutes. However, the mentality and composure of the Indonesian players in the penalty executions proved decisive.
Indonesia Dominant in the First Half
From the start of the match, Indonesia immediately took the initiative. The squad under John Herdman played aggressively and sought to press Thailand’s defense.
Indonesia’s first chance arrived just two minutes into the game. Vickery tried a shot, but his attempt was still too weak and easily secured.
Indonesia created another opportunity in the 7th minute through Mitchell Baker. However, his shot was still able to be parried by the Thai goalkeeper. In the 18th minute, it was Ole Romeny’s turn to try his luck. Ole’s shot still sailed just over the crossbar.
Indonesia continued to control the flow of the match. Calvin Verdonk also managed to unleash a long-range shot, but the ball only skimmed past the right side of Thailand’s goal.
Although Indonesia was more dominant in possession, Thailand several times managed to create chances through counterattacks. However, their finishing had yet to find the target.
Entering the final 10 minutes of the first half, the tempo of the match dropped slightly. Both teams also showed disciplined defending so that not many spaces could be exploited. Until the referee blew the whistle to end the first half, the score remained 0-0.
Thailand Played More Defensively
Entering the second half, Indonesia again took the attacking initiative. John Herdman began making changes to maintain the intensity of the game. Dane James came on to replace Thom Haye, while Rizky Ridho replaced Luke Vickery.
Ivar Jenner then came on to replace Ragnar Oratmangoen. Indonesia again received a golden opportunity through a pass directed to Mitchell Baker. However, Baker’s shot still went just wide of the right side of the goal.
Indonesia’s pressure finally paid off in the 84th minute. Ole Romeny was fouled in front of Thailand’s penalty box. Indonesia received a free kick in a fairly dangerous position.
Dane James stepped up as the taker. His shot struck Thai player Iklas before changing direction and deceiving the Thai goalkeeper. The ball entered the net and Indonesia finally took a 1-0 lead.
Thailand had to play with 10 men after Nicholas Mickelson received a second yellow card and was eventually sent off. Despite being a player down, Thailand managed to deliver a surprise.
In the 87th minute, Iklas redeemed his earlier mistake by scoring the equalizer. Iklas unleashed a powerful shot into the corner of the goal that Audero Emil could not reach.
The score changed to 1-1. The referee added seven minutes of stoppage time in the second half. However, Indonesia failed to take advantage of the numerical superiority to score again.
Until the final whistle of the second half was blown, the score remained 1-1. The match then had to proceed to extra time.
