Malang, en.SERU.co.id – The Malang City Government has called for the 81st anniversary of Indonesian Independence to be observed with activities that do not create large crowds. The decision was taken amid mourning following the earthquake disaster that struck East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

Malang Mayor Dr Ir Wahyu Hidayat MM said this year’s independence celebrations would not be held in a highly festive manner. Even so, the observance still carries meaning.

“Because we are currently in mourning, as our brothers and sisters in NTT are experiencing a disaster. Of course, this celebration follows the guidance of not having too much crowding, yet it is full of meaning,” Wahyu said after leading the 81st Independence Day ceremony at Malang City Hall on Monday, August 17, 2026.

According to Wahyu, the current situation does not diminish the essence of Independence Day. On the contrary, the 81st anniversary should serve as an opportunity to strengthen care and togetherness among fellow citizens.

“We invite the public to interpret independence not only as the freedom to enjoy the results of the heroes’ struggle. Independence is also a shared responsibility to maintain, fill and pass it on to future generations,” he said.

The city’s top official stressed that contributions to filling independence can be made in many ways according to each person’s role. These include achievements, innovation, honesty, mutual cooperation, social care and concrete work.

“Whatever our profession and role, whether as students, teachers, civil servants, members of the military and police, health workers, business people or members of the community, all of us have the same opportunity. We can give our best contribution to Indonesia,” he stated.

Wahyu also linked the 81st Independence Day observance to the theme “Indonesia Berdaulat, Adil, dan Makmur” (Sovereign, Just and Prosperous Indonesia). That spirit must be realised through concrete steps, including at the local level.

The City of Malang has a responsibility to help achieve those ideals by strengthening regional independence. This can be done through improved food security, energy self-reliance, economic growth and higher competitiveness of human resources.

“From the government side, we must improve governance to better serve the public. We hope that in the midst of the 81st anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia we can be sovereign, just and prosperous,” he said.

Wahyu added that the development of Malang is not solely the responsibility of the government. Community participation, social care, maintaining harmony and collaboration among residents are also important parts of building the city.

He expressed the hope that the spirit of independence would remain strong while serving as a reminder to help and care for one another, especially when some members of the Indonesian community are facing hardship.

“This is one of the steps we must take. Targets we must deliver and that give the public confidence that the government is present,” he concluded. (bas/mzm)
