Probolinggo, en.SERU.co.id – A wildfire in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park has grown to 899.35 hectares, officials said Tuesday, as strong winds, steep terrain and dry weather continue to hamper efforts to bring the blaze under control.
Colonel Wahyu Ramadhanus Suryawan, sector commander for the fire response and commander of the 083/Bdj Military Resort, said the burned area has increased from 742 hectares reported Monday. The fire, which began on August 3, now covers roughly 899.35 hectares, with crews focusing on the remaining active hotspots.
The three main active zones are Watangan (817.342 hectares), Argopuro (25.393 hectares), and the Dingklik-Pakis Bincil-Mungal area (56.65 hectares).
Joint task force teams are intensifying suppression work, but dry vegetation and rugged ground are slowing progress. Thick fog has also restricted visibility for water-bombing helicopters. Authorities have scaled operations from three helicopters to two, adjusting to weather and pilot conditions on the ground.

“Our priority is to break the fire’s path, so it does not spread into fresh vegetation,” Wahyu said.
Early analysis suggests pure natural causes are unlikely to be the main trigger, given that parts of the Bromo area still retain some moisture even in the dry season.
To prevent the fire from flaring up again, officials have planned regular joint patrols, the stationing of combined personnel, and coordinated public information management. (wul/rhd)
