Malang, en.SERU.co.id — Universitas Brawijaya (UB) has once again held basic Occupational Safety, Health, and Environment (K3L) training for hundreds of educational staff members. The program is a key part of the university’s effort to build a “Resilient K3L Campus” and push toward its zero-accident goal.

University Secretary Dr. Tri Wahyu Nugroho, S.P., M.Si., said the training is an annual event designed to keep the entire campus community prepared.

“This is a routine activity every year so that our readiness stays sharp. We want more people at UB to know exactly what to do if an emergency happens,” Tri said on Tuesday (30/6/2026).

This round of training targeted staff from the Housekeeping Division, including security officers, cleaning workers, and parking attendants — roles considered higher-risk because they work across the campus grounds. UB aims for every member of the academic community to have solid basic K3L knowledge.

Students have already received similar large-scale training in the past, and the university plans to keep expanding the safety culture to all groups on campus.

The initiative is one of the priority programs of the Rector under the Kampus Tangguh K3L banner. As part of its commitment, UB has installed safety equipment such as portable fire extinguishers (APAR) and first-aid kits (P3K) in every building. The university has also developed supporting regulations and strengthened human resources in this area. K3L performance has even become part of the assessment criteria in inter-faculty competitions.

Hands-On Training, Not Just Theory

Head of UB’s K3L Division, Prof. Dr. Ir. Qomariyatus Sholihah, S.T., M.Kes., explained that the training for educational staff is being conducted in three waves of 100 participants each. All groups receive the same combination of theory and practical sessions.

“These are staff members who face higher risks in their daily duties,” she said. Participants learned core K3L principles, risk management, mental health awareness, and first aid (P3K). The training also included collaboration with the Malang City Fire Department (Damkar).

In the practical sessions, participants practiced using fire extinguishers, manual fire suppression with gunny sacks, and familiarized themselves with fire trucks. They also received guidance on safely handling snakes — a real concern given UB’s expansive green open spaces.

On the first-aid side, trainees learned proper techniques for dealing with fainting victims and traffic accident casualties, emphasizing the importance of not taking the wrong actions that could worsen injuries.

Participants took a pre-test before the sessions and a post-test afterward to measure their improvement. The K3L Division will continue monitoring and evaluating the staff throughout the year to track behavioral changes and shape future training programs.

“K3L is fundamentally about prevention, so results aren’t always immediately visible. The most important thing is building a safety-conscious mindset and culture. Our ultimate target is achieving zero accidents at Universitas Brawijaya,” Prof. Qomariyatus (often called Qoqom) said. (bas/rhd)
