Malang, en.SERU.co.id – State University of Malang (UM) has cracked the top 10 best universities in Asia, according to the latest AD Scientific Index ranking.
The public university placed fourth in the Top 10 Asian Universities in Education category, cementing its position as one of the region’s leading institutions in the field. Nationally, UM also claimed the number-one spot in education among Indonesian universities in the same ranking.
Rector Prof Dr. Hariyono MPd, welcomed the international recognition as validation of the university’s long-standing commitment to quality and innovation.
“This success gives us fresh energy to keep pushing for transformation — both at the individual and institutional levels. As The Learning University, UM must continue to evolve and respond to the challenges of our time,” he explained in a statement published on the UM website Thursday (April 9, 2026).
Prof. Hariyono stressed that the university’s transformation goes beyond structural changes. It also involves strengthening core values, work culture, and sustainable institutional practices. He called on the campus community to remain firmly rooted in Nusantara (Indonesian archipelago) culture while staying open to global developments.
“UM must stay anchored in Nusantara culture and be adaptive to global dynamics. As part of world civilization, we have a responsibility to contribute through science and technology,” he said.
He added that achievements in education must be sustained through continuous innovation and deliver tangible benefits to society.

In a separate statement, Vice Rector IV Prof Ahmad Munjin Nasih, SPd, MAg, said UM is committed to fostering an open, democratic, and participatory meritocracy that aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals — particularly in quality education, innovation, and partnerships.
“Our biggest challenge is actually complacency. In academia, questioning is the main engine of knowledge. That is why dialogue and the spirit of critical thinking must be constantly nurtured,” Prof. Nasih said.
He expressed hope that the latest ranking would not only be maintained but further improved through stronger collaboration across the university.
“This is a proud achievement. We hope every member of the academic community will continue to create, innovate, and safeguard this momentum so that our performance keeps rising,” he stated. (aan/rhd)
