Malang, en.SERU.co.id — Indonesian migrant worker Erik Prawiro, 32, from Crabaan hamlet in Sumbersuko village, Dampit district, Malang Regency, has died in Tokyo, Japan. He is believed to have passed away more than a day before his body was found, with initial indications pointing to heart disease.
Tri Darmawan, head of the Labour Placement Division at the Malang Regency Manpower Office, said his office only received word of the death on Monday night (July 24, 2026). Erik had complained of feeling unwell during a recreational outing the previous week.
“On the 16th he went for recreation. He worked on the 17th and 18th, then did not come in on the 19th. But on the 16th, while he was at the beach, he already complained of pain,” Tri told SERU.co.id.
When friends working in the same place could not reach him, they decided to visit his residence. There was no response and the door was locked. Concerned, they forced it open.
“On Thursday he still could not be contacted, so his friends took the initiative to go to his place, broke down the door, and found that he had already died. The death was then reported to the family and to the training institution where the late Erik had studied,” Tri explained.
Initial information received by the office points to a heart attack as the cause of death. Official confirmation, however, is still awaited in the form of a formal death certificate and arrangements for the repatriation of the remains.

“I have confirmed with the Indonesian Embassy. It is confirmed. The company has also communicated with the embassy and reported the matter, and the police have submitted their report as well,” he said.
Tri added that his office is coordinating with village officials to protect the family from body brokers who often demand hundreds of millions of rupiah under the guise of repatriation costs. The village is preparing the necessary documents for collection of the body by ambulance through BP3MI or the East Java Manpower Office’s technical unit for the protection of Indonesian migrant workers.
“He left under the Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) program, Japan’s government-to-government scheme. Information indicates it was about two and a half years ago, around 2023,” Tri said. (wul/mzm)
