“Romi Jahat, our Babeh (a term of endearment meaning ‘father’ or ‘elder’), our friend, our brother, has returned home. Thank you for all the love and support you’ve given us over the years. Al-Fatihah,” the band stated in their official Instagram upload on Tuesday, February 10, 2026.

Romi’s departure represents a profound loss for Indonesia’s national punk scene, where he was revered as a trailblazer. As of this report, no official statement has been released regarding the precise cause of his passing. However, it is known that Romi had been undergoing medical care for nearly two weeks due to his steadily worsening condition.

Just three weeks prior to his death, Romi & The Jahats had canceled several scheduled performances. The band explained that Romi’s physical state made it impossible for him to perform, necessitating further medical attention.

Romi Jahat was a pivotal figure in the evolution of Indonesian punk music, with a career that spanned decades and influenced generations.

He began his musical journey in the late 1990s, emerging as the original vocalist for the legendary punk band Marjinal in 1997. His time with Marjinal was marked by a strong ethos of social resistance, channeling frustrations over inequality, corruption, and societal norms into raw, unfiltered anthems.

After leaving Marjinal, Romi founded a new band in 2008 called Romy and The Bad Boy, which evolved into the widely recognized Romi & The Jahats by 2009. The band’s name cleverly encapsulates themes of intrigue, violence, and life’s ironies, which Romi consistently infused into his sharp, straightforward lyrics.

Over nearly 18 years of active creation, Romi & The Jahats released five full-length albums, cementing their place in the genre. Their last album, Teman (meaning “Friend”), was launched in April 2025, showcasing matured songwriting while retaining the band’s signature edge.

Alongside core band members, Romi produced iconic tracks such as “Hore”, “Tunggu Mati” (Wait for Death”), and the latest release “Suaraku” (“My Voice”). (aan/rhd)
