Malang, en.SERU.co.id – The Malang City Government (Pemkot Malang) has officially introduced its new signature traditional attire, “Busana Khas Malangan,” during the celebration of the city’s 112th anniversary.

Mayor of Malang, Dr. Ir. Wahyu Hidayat, MM, stated that the creation of this attire is part of efforts to build a resilient, adaptive, and creative city character. The outfit serves as a cultural symbol that not only reflects the city’s rich history but also strengthens its regional identity.

“This traditional attire represents the harmonious blend of local values, historical heritage, and colonial nuances that have shaped Malang until today,” said Mayor Wahyu on Wednesday (1/4/2026).

The design incorporates several iconic elements of Malang, including the Malang Monument (Tugu Malang), lotus flowers, and the “Pecah Kopi” batik motif inspired by split coffee beans. Classic aesthetic touches further enhance the philosophical meaning behind the garment.

Head of the Malang City Education and Culture Agency (Disdikbud), Suwarjana, SE, MM, explained that the new attire is a modern development of traditional clothing used in the past. Previously, the outfit consisted of a long black beskap with a white inner shirt, paired with a long batik cloth, a sash, an obi belt, a peaked cap, and an udeng (traditional headcloth).

“However, the long batik cloth was considered less practical for field activities. Therefore, the design was adjusted for better mobility by incorporating black trousers,” he added.

The latest design features a black V-neck jacket with a white shirt and long tie, paired with a “Tugu Pecah Kopi” batik cloth worn over the knee and black trousers. The headpiece still uses a peaked cap combined with an udeng featuring the same batik motif. The look is completed with black leather dress shoes.

The “Tugu Pecah Kopi” batik motif itself is derived from the kawung pattern found on statues from the Singasari Kingdom era, later combined with coffee elements and the iconic Malang Monument.

Both the mayor and the culture agency hope that this new traditional attire will further strengthen Malang’s local identity and become a proud symbol of the city.
