Malang, en.SERU.co.id – The Tridharma community at Eng An Kiong Temple is joyfully celebrating Chinese New Year 2577 Kongzili, marking the arrival of the Year of the Fire Horse and bringing fresh hopes for the Indonesian nation.

David Kurniawan, the temple’s public relations officer, described this year’s festivities as a moment for reflection. Hundreds of devotees gathered to offer prayers of gratitude, thankful for the opportunity to welcome the new year in good health and spirits.

“We are grateful to have made it through to this Chinese New Year in fine condition. We hope that in 2577, Indonesia continues to thrive, Malang City remains safe and peaceful, allowing people to work and go about their daily lives with ease,” David said on Tuesday, February 17, 2026.

In addition to the prayers, the celebration featured lively lion dance performances and cultural shows, wrapping up around 8:00 PM WIB.

However, David emphasized that the core of the event lies in the solemnity of worship.

“The series of rituals began with prayers to Thian Gong, followed by offerings to the Household Deity. Coincidentally, this day also marks the birthday of Buddha Maitreya, so the community included special prayers for that as well,” he explained.

David elaborated on the significance of the Year of the Fire Horse, or Bing Wu, in the Chinese calendar. This system features 12 zodiac animals as earthly branches and 10 heavenly stems divided into Yin and Yang elements.

“This year is Bing (great fire) and Wu (horse) with a Yang fire element. Bing Wu is known as an active, powerful fire, and we hope Indonesia remains stable and prosperous,” he said.

David advised the Tridharma followers to manage their emotions and words carefully this year, as the Fire Horse’s energy can make people more prone to agitation.

“The Year of Bing Wu last occurred in 1966, which was marked by significant events in various countries. That’s why we’re praying for Indonesia to be spared from any misfortunes and to maintain prosperity with stable economic conditions,” he added.

In the spirit of the Year of the Fire Horse, David also shared a special message for the nation’s leaders. He urged them to honor the trust placed in them by the people and to be more open to public aspirations.

“The horse is strong and hardworking. We hope our leaders work with the vigor of a horse but without recklessness—meaning diligent efforts that yield real, positive impacts for the people,” he stated.

He further noted that in Tridharma teachings and other faiths, leaders are expected to serve as exemplars. They must foster good relationships both horizontally with fellow humans and vertically with the divine.

“Once entrusted by the people, leaders must listen and set a good example. Just like temple administrators, they should be role models for their community, driving positive change,” he concluded. (bas/mzm)
