Jakarta, en.SERU.co.id – The United States government has unsealed millions of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case, implicating global elites, including figures from Indonesia. This represents the largest archive in the history of the investigation into his sexual crimes. However, the appearance of names in these documents does not automatically imply criminal involvement, and the public is urged to exercise caution in their interpretation.
This release marks the biggest public disclosure in the Epstein saga. In total, approximately three million pages of documents have been made available, along with 180,000 photos and 2,000 videos. It stands as one of the most extensive criminal investigation archives ever published by the US government.
Epstein himself was rearrested in 2019 on federal charges of sex trafficking minors. Shortly afterward, he was found dead in his jail cell, with US authorities ruling it a suicide.
High-Profile Names Emerge
The initial wave of released documents immediately captured global attention. Numerous politicians, business leaders, and international celebrities appear repeatedly in the investigative files. These include former US Presidents Bill Clinton and Donald Trump, Elon Musk, Bill Gates, and Britain’s Prince Andrew (Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor).
Legendary musicians such as Mick Jagger and Michael Jackson are also mentioned in the documents. However, US authorities emphasize that being named does not automatically indicate criminal complicity. Many references are to contacts, witnesses, or communication logs that may not relate to Epstein’s crimes.
Indonesian Traces in the Epstein Archive
A keyword search for “Indonesia” in the Epstein document catalog yields 902 files, containing names of Indonesian officials and businesspeople.
Muhammad Fatahillah Akbar, a criminal law lecturer at Gadjah Mada University, stressed the importance of careful reading.
“If there’s no connection to unlawful acts, generally there’s no issue. This is just open information for the public in accordance with US laws,” he said, as quoted by BBC Indonesia on Thursday, February 5, 2026.
Instead of symbolizing transparency, the document release has sparked serious controversy. The US Department of Justice (DOJ) admitted to retracting thousands of documents and media files, particularly after discovering fatal errors in redacting victims’ identities.
Nearly 100 victims are reportedly at renewed risk due to improperly concealed personal data. The exposed materials include nude photos, email addresses, and banking information. Some victims have reported receiving death threats.
US Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche acknowledged sporadic errors in the redaction process but insisted they were minimal.
“Every time we receive a report from a victim or their lawyer, we correct it immediately. The number is only about 0.001 percent of the total material,” Blanche stated.
The DOJ also affirmed that all nude or pornographic images have been redacted, considering all women in the visual materials as potential victims.
Key Issues in the Epstein Documents
One of the most attention-grabbing documents is a 2017 email correspondence between Epstein and Bill Gates. In the emails, Epstein discusses a collaboration proposal with Gates and his team.
The documents reveal technical discussions across various fields, from domestic security to health. The point drawing the most speculation is a follow-up recommendation on simulating a new virus variant pandemic, which has fueled global conspiracy theories.
Another document uncovers an equally controversial story involving a businessman reportedly based in the United Arab Emirates, Aziza Al Ahmadi. He is recorded as sending three pieces of the Kiswah (the black cloth covering the Ka’bah) from Mecca to Epstein’s home in the US in March 2017. In the correspondence, Aziza notes that the black fabric has been touched by millions of Muslims from various sects.
Domino Effect on the British Monarchy
The Epstein case has once again shaken the British royal family. A charity founded by Sarah Ferguson, the former Duchess of York, has been officially closed after emails revealing her closeness to Epstein surfaced.
Ferguson is the ex-wife of Prince Andrew, who had previously been stripped of his royal titles due to his close ties with Epstein. This scandal extends the list of social and political impacts from Epstein’s network, which spans national borders and elite institutions.
Before his arrest in July 2019, Epstein was known as a prominent financier. According to Forbes, his wealth at the time of death was estimated at $578 million, including luxury properties, two private islands in the Caribbean, and other cash and investment assets. (aan/rhd)
