Malang, en.SERU.co.id – The long-awaited revitalization of Alun-Alun Merdeka, a beloved landmark and pride of Malang residents, has finally been completed and officially inaugurated.

The Malang City Government announced that the inauguration marks the start of an integrated heritage tourism development in the area.

Mayor of Malang, Dr. Ir. Wahyu Hidayat MM, described the event as a highly anticipated moment for the community after an extensive planning and construction process.

He expressed his admiration for the tremendous enthusiasm shown by residents, who flocked to enjoy the new facilities—from children’s playgrounds to the stunning dancing fountain show.

“Alhamdulillah, tonight we can officially inaugurate it. The public’s enthusiasm is extraordinary. They’re enjoying the views, the fountain, and all the other facilities,” exclaimed Wahyu following the inauguration on Wednesday evening, January 28, 2026.

He emphasized that the revitalization was not a unilateral government effort but involved input from various stakeholders to foster a strong sense of ownership among the public.

“Building is easy, but maintaining is difficult. That’s why I want this sense of belonging to grow in people’s hearts, so we can care for the square together,” he said.

The mayor also extended appreciation to Bank Jatim for its strong collaboration through a CSR program, which made the revitalization possible.

Integrated Heritage Tourism Begins Here

Mayor Wahyu explained that the redevelopment of Alun-Alun Merdeka kickstarts a broader plan to connect key public spaces into a unified heritage tourism route.

This includes areas around Splendid, Mall Ramayana, and nearby vacant spots, linking them with established sites like Kayutangan Heritage, Alun-Alun Merdeka, and the Malang Kota Baru Station area.

The integrated heritage tourism concept will not only provide entertainment but also serve as an educational space. Features include historical information panels, reading corners, a mobile library, and preserved green open spaces starting from Alun-Alun Merdeka.

DLH to Monitor and Maintain the New Facilities

Acting Head of the Malang City Environmental Agency (DLH), Drs. Gamaliel Raymond Hatigoran Matondang MAP, reported that the rehabilitation took 105 working days.

The inauguration itself drew massive crowds and proceeded smoothly.

“Public turnout tonight exceeded expectations. On the Mayor’s instructions, residents participated in the opening procession from start to finish,” he said.

New attractions such as the dry fountain (open water play area), expanded children’s playground, revitalized amphitheater, skateboard arena, additional washrooms, and a lactation room have become major draws.

DLH plans to evaluate and monitor the site for the next week, including usage of the playground and fountain. Security and cleanliness will be strengthened with 24-hour staffing.

Future maintenance is estimated to require an additional annual budget of Rp300–400 million for operations, security, cleaning, and repairs.

Residents Thrilled with the New Look

Thousands of locals enthusiastically welcomed the reopening.

Siti Aminah from Sawojajar shared her excitement upon hearing the square was reopening.

“My children asked to come play right away because of the open fountain they can splash in. The playground now has even more toys and options,” she said.

Siti hopes the revamped Alun-Alun Merdeka becomes a new icon for Malang, drawing more visitors as part of the integrated heritage tourism plan. Her family already visited twice a week to entertain the kids.

“Let’s maintain it together—this is Malang’s pride. I’m sure a better-organized tourism scene will bring even more visitors,” she concluded. (bas/rhd)
